Computer screens showing drupal code and with a hand pointing to the screen

Dogwood has been deeply involved in the Drupal community since we began in 2019. Our contracts won’t allow us to list the clients we have worked with across the United States, but in 2026, we are taking on our first municipal client outside of other contracted work. We will be introducing the new Town of Pike Road site very soon, and can’t wait to show it off!

When pursuing this contract, we conducted extensive research to determine whether this was the right project where Drupal was the better choice over WordPress. It had to make sense for the client and us, plus the client needed to be bought in on this decision as well.

For years, Drupal has been the “old reliable” of the enterprise CMS world. The robust, secure choice for complex, content-heavy sites. But as we move into 2026, Drupal has shed its monolithic image. It has evolved into a sleek, API-first engine that powers high-performance digital experiences across every screen imaginable.

If you haven’t looked at Drupal lately, the landscape has changed. From headless architectures to the new “AI-first” mandate, here is how Drupal is leading the charge in modern web development.

The Rise of the Headless & Decoupled Stack

In 2026, “Headless Drupal” isn’t just a trend; it’s a standard for organizations that need maximum flexibility. By decoupling the backend (where your content lives) from the frontend (what your users see), you get the best of both worlds.

  • Frontend Freedom: Our developers are no longer tied to Drupal’s native theming engine. We can build blistering-fast frontends using frameworks like React (Next.js) or Vue (Nuxt). This allows for app-like interactions and seamless transitions that traditional sites struggle to match.
  • Omnichannel Delivery: With a decoupled approach, your content is stored as “pure data.” This means the same interview or product description you post in Drupal can simultaneously feed your website, a native mobile app, a digital kiosk, or even a smart-home device.
  • The “Hybrid” Middle Ground: Not every project needs to be fully headless. Drupal’s recent advancements in Component-based Theming allow us to use modern JS frameworks for interactive sections of a page while keeping the backend simple for your content editors.

An AI-First Ecosystem

The biggest shift in 2026 is the Drupal AI Initiative. This isn’t just about sticking a chatbot on a page; it’s about embedding artificial intelligence into the very fabric of how you manage a website.

  • Autonomous Agents: We are now seeing AI agents that work in the background to handle tedious tasks—like auto-tagging media, suggesting SEO improvements in real-time, or even translating content for global audiences as soon as a draft is saved.
  • The Context Control Center: Drupal is evolving to understand your “brand truth.” By feeding AI your brand voice, target audience personas, and key data points, it can help editors draft content that is consistently “on brand” every time.
  • Smarter Search: With AI-powered web services, site search has moved past simple keyword matching. It now understands intent, providing users with actual answers rather than just a list of links.

Catch Us at DrupalCon Chicago 2026!

The Drupal community moves fast, and the best place to see these innovations in action is at DrupalCon. This year, the event is taking place in Chicago from March 23–26, and the Dogwood team will be there in full force!

Zo, Brett, Jesse, and Brian are heading to the Windy City to dive into the latest sessions on decoupled architecture, AI integration, and the Drupal 12 roadmap. We’re excited to connect with other leaders in the space and bring back fresh strategies for our clients.

We’re sure to have plenty of “hot takes” and deep-dive insights once we get back, so keep an eye out for a follow-up post in April that recaps everything we learned from the event.
